Purple cupcakes?

Yep. By Hostess. They are "Wonka cakes", promoting the new movie. Well, actually, it's just the top frosting and inner filling that are purple. The cake part is chocolate. Oh, and the curly design on top is orange. They taste a LOT better than they look!

I've been getting them for .99 cents a box, at my local Hostess Thrift bakery. (When I was a kid, we called it the "day old" bakery. ) Yeah, you can tell that the Purple aspect was a big seller...

Some people just think that purple isn't a good color for eating, I guess. (I love Blue frosting, myself. ) But the purple is pretty tasty.

... that is both twisted and satisfyingly delicious at the same time...

For those of you who are also Nine Inch Nails fans, my dear pal Mr Arkmay, an uber-genius dj/mixer, made several remixes of the new NIN song "Only." His Bollywood remix won him a meet-&-Greet w/Trent & the boys down in San Diego a few months back... but that's not why you're reading this post.

Check this shiznit out, particularly the Willy Wonka remix of "Only."

differences in each film

I went back to re-read the book after seeing the remake. It occurred to me that in order to be fair to the new one, we should mention how the original film differs from the book in several ways, some insignificant, some significant.

Other than the trivial differences, we have

1. Veruca Salt and the nuts. Changed to golden geese. No significant difference really. Spoiled brat gets her comeuppance.

2. Slugworth. One of Wonka's competitors in the book, barely mentioned. A very significant plot device in the movie. His corruption of the children (come to the dark side!) drives the story.

3. Fizzy lifting drinks. Barely mentioned in the book, but in the original film it is charlie's downfall. Very significant when you consider that Charlie (in the book) is an entirely "good" child, while in the film he isn't perfect. He and Grandpa Joe disobey Mr. Wonka.

4. The winning move. In the book Charlie is rewarded for being perfectly good, but in the film he is rewarded for not betraying Wonka's secrets.

Trained squirrels!

From sfgate.com...

BURTON TRAINS UP SQUIRRELS FOR WONKA FILM
Director Tim Burton has spent six months training 200 squirrels for a scene in his latest movie, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

The original 1971 movie didn't include any animals, but the eccentric filmmaker was so desperate to create the "nut room" from Roald Dahl's original novel, he spent millions of dollars teaching the bushy-tailed rodents how to crack nuts and load them onto a conveyor belt.

The painstaking scene took another 10 weeks to shoot at London's Pinewood Studios.

A source says, "We used actual rodents. From birth, we sent them to training school for six months.

"Tim was determined to bring the nut room to life. Using squirrels proved too difficult in the first film but he spent millions of dollars getting it right."

He also created an 80-foot chocolate waterfall and a chocolate river for the movie, which stars Burton's fiancee Helena Bonham Carter and Hollywood hunk Johnny Depp.

The more I see the trailers the more I've felt uncomfortable with Depps take on Wonka. I'll still wait for the movie before I pass judgement. But apparently I'm not the only one who finds his role uncomfortably close to a bad Michael Jackson imitation...

which songs do you find yourself singing? right now i have Pure Imagination in my head. I also love Veruca's song/tantrum.

Hey, guys, there's finally a real trailer up (it came out a few days ago, but I forgot to mention it). It's very very trippy. And please, when you watch it, remember that this is NOT supposed to be like the old version. Just keep that in mind.

Hello everyone! My name's Scott and I recently signed on to Tribe.net. I just discovered this tribe tonight, joined and wanted to say hello.

This movie has got to be one of the greatest movies ever made. On those occassions when I feel like being a little boy again, I'll pop in the dvd and forget about being an adult for a couple of hours. My favorite part of the movie is, of course, the ending, but another part that cracks me up is the scene on the boat where Mr. Salt asks Wonka "Is this some sort of funhouse?", and Wonka replies "Why, having fun?" Roald Dahl wrote a wonderful story not only for children, but for the child that resides in all of us as well. I am looking forward to the remake coming out in May and think Johnny Depp was the perfect choice to play the role of the eccentric candy man.

i haven't seen any trailers so i'm not even sure if the movie's going to be a musical or not
the songs were so important in the orignal
can j.d. sing?
of course, they can make an audio replacement track pretty easily but i still wonder...
i was really impressed when ewan mcgregor, the scrawny loser/winner from trainspotting showed up a few years later crooning to nicole kidman (moulin rouge) and renee zellweger (down with love). so who knows what depp is capbable of.

I don't mean to offend anyone but I have had it with the a-holes in Hollywood. Are they that lacking in imagination and creativity that they have to keep re-making classic films? I don't know if this new incarnation of Wonka is strictly a re-make but it seems that way to me. The original film is perfect, there is no need to do it again. I don't care if its Tim Burton and Johnny Depp or anyone else for that matter. The most disheartening aspect is that a whole new generation of kids will see the re-make and regardless of its quality will be forever ruined with the original film. I am opening this up to a hopefully fair and objective discussion and of course when the film is actually released then I will pass final judgment but in advance of that the concept of re-making the movie and any other classic film just plain stinks in my mind. Come on Hollywood, come up with some new ideas. This is pure insanity and/or stupidity. Like I said, don't fix it if it ain't broke.

i'm a big fan of JD
but i saw a trailer the other day
(it was very brief and on the warner bros. site)
an the thought occurred to me that JD looks so young!
i know the movie is going to be different
but Wilder was just wilder looking
he was really weird because he could be your father
or he could be your worst nightmare
that's how he played it
JD looks a little too benign
all of a sudden i wondered about whether or not JD was right
his face looks too smooth or something
i don't know.
i'm sure the movie will be great but i just had this creepy feeling...

Wilder is interviewed about his new memoir, "Kiss Me Like a Stranger." There's one brief mention of Wonka:

"...have you seen Johnny Depp in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?'"

"Not yet. If I were asked to do a remake, I would have said maybe after they do the remake of 'The Wizard of Oz.' But if I were going to do it, I would have cast Johnny Depp because I think he's a wonderful actor. I don’t think this movie's going to be anything like [the original]."

With the new movie set for release in July, I am wondering what is everyone's take on the original movie versus the book. I assume that this Tribe specifically concerns the movie (judging by its name, rather than "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"). I adore Roald Dahl, and I find the movie in many ways a extremely different narrative journey than the book, even accounting for the change in media; however, I enjoy both the book and the movie. How do people feel that one is stronger than the other?

I'll say it; I'm against the idea of Tim Burton re-making The Chocolate Factory.

Recall Mike Meyer's "Cat in the Hat", or Jim Carrey's "Grinch." These things are vanity plays, nostalgic rip-offs made by spoiled stars who have run out of originality and greedily steal the glory of our pasts cultural acheivements, hoping to gain the kind of belovedness that they cannot hope to create on their own.

Look at Burton's "Planet of the Apes." What a waste of effort. It felt like television version. Mind you, I think Burton's a genius filmmaker, and for the life of me I cant figure why he's polluting himself with this trash. We know he's capable of making pablum, but even pablum like Scissorhands was excellent compared to stuff like Apes and Sleepy Hollow.

And Johnny Depp is a poor substitute for Gene Wilder.

Yes, its all my opinion, and nothing more, except maybe a prediction. You'll see. Meanwhile, wake me when its all over.

If the new movie goes over well...you suppose Burton may move further and do a Great Glass Elevator movie?

The Book

So what's the deal with the book?

We all know that Roald Dahl hated the movie, but I for one don't understand why. I just finished reading the short story (novella?) of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and... it's lame as fuck. It's a piss poor synopsis of the *much* more creative and interesting movie.

The basic plot was there. The same kids were there and they all disappeared in their various ways, but it all happened, beginning to end, in under 150 pages. In a /large font/. It's basically a verbose and slightly rant-ish children's story that no stable child would ever care to read and I'm really quite disappointed and now /not/ looking forward to this upcoming "true interpretation" of the book. It'll be 30 minutes long with 25 of those being ranting, preaching bullshit coming from the Oopma Loompas.

What gives? Who here thinks the book is better and why do you think so? What am I missing?

First things first: This is not Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. Rather, "it's going more in the direction that [author] Roald Dahl intended," says Johnny Depp, who, in his fourth collaboration with director Tim Burton (and second with his Finding Neverland costar Freddie Highmore), plays the eccentric confectionary genius as a "game-show host"-cum-"bratty child." Although they're adhering closely to Dahl's text, Burton and screenwriter John August (Big Fish) have added a backstory for Wonka, revolving around his relationship with his dentist father (Christopher Lee). There are also several Danny Elfman-penned songs. "Anything new, we tried to run it through the thing of, 'Is it in the spirit of the book?'" says Burton, who insisted on real squirrels whenever possible for the Nut Room sequences and non-CG Oompa-Loompas, each of which is played by the diminutive actor Deep Roy, shrunk to 30 inches onscreen. The elaborate sets, built at England's Pineview Studios, are also very real. "It was important to have sets," says Burton, "just so you feel like you're there more. And having a bunch of kids in a blue-screen room would be a nightmare for everybody."

Dr Who return hit by shortage of dwarf actors

Exclusive By Cameron Robertson

FILMING of the new Doctor Who series has been hit by a shortage of midget actors.

Bosses wanted them to play tiny blue aliens - but most have been snapped up for the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie and to play Gringotts Bank staff in the new Harry Potter film.

Dr Who executive producer Russell T Davies said: "It's very difficult to employ persons of restricted growth when, as our producer Phil Collinson says, `Bloody Gringotts and the Chocolate Factory are filming at the same time'."

Insiders on the BBC1 sci-fi drama admit it has proved a headache during shooting of the 13-part series, due to be wrapped up next month.

One said: "The two big movies have snapped up the talent. It's been hard to find who we want."

Peter Burroughs - whose Peterborough-based Willow Personal Management is one of just two UK agencies for dwarf actors - admitted he had been unable to supply Dr Who with a 3ft 8in star.

He said: "That was very difficult to find, especially with the other productions going on."

The new series, with Christopher Eccleston as Dr Who and Billie Piper as sidekick Rose Tyler, is due to start in March.

a friend of a friend is an extra on the set here in the UK, can't reveal much as may get sacked - apparently, someone playing one of the reporters (in the scene before the gates open and the children are met by wonka) cheekily brought along a real lens and film - they'd been supplied with empty camera cases - and was busted snapping away, and has been sacked.

apparently it looks incredible, and most of the architecture is a blend of victorian and gothic.

The Castro Theatre will be showing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at noon on Sunday, September 26th as part of their Children's Classic Film Festival.

The Castro is a beautiful theatre with a huge screen and a pipe organ. Unfortunately, I'll be unable to attend this screening but wanted to pass it along.

Elfman to provide Oompa Loompa voices

From aintitcool.com:

Sometimes, you pick up news in the oddest places. I was watching the magnificent new FORBIDDEN ZONE DVD the other day, and in the extras, there’s a big batch of interviews with the principals in the film conducted by Richard Elfman himself. One of the most interesting ibts of that interview is when he ends up talking to Danny Elfman. They talk a bit about their days in The Mystic Knights Of Oingo Boingo, and then Richard asks Danny about playing the Devil in FORBIDDEN ZONE. And then he compliments him on his work as Jack in THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, which leads Richard to ask, “Is there any chance you’ll ever sing in a movie again or perform a part like that again?”

And, perfectly casual, like it’s already common knowledge, Danny says, “Yeah, actually. I’m singing all of the Ooompa Loompa songs in CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. I’ll be doing the voices of the Oompa Loompas.”

Tim Burton Begins Chocolate Factory Production

Director Tim Burton Begins Production on ``Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'' for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures
Wednesday June 30, 2:40 pm ET

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 2004--Production has commenced in London on "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," a fantasy adventure directed by Tim Burton and based on Roald Dahl's classic tale, for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film stars Oscar-nominated Johnny Depp ("Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl") as ingenious candymaker Willy Wonka, marking the actor's fourth collaboration with director Burton. Twelve-year-old British actor Freddie Highmore, who costars in the films "Two Brothers" and "J.M Barrie's Neverland," and portrayed the young King Arthur in Turner Network's mini-series "The Mists of Avalon," takes on the title role of Charlie.

Joining the ensemble are Helena Bonham Carter, David Kelly, Noah Taylor, James Fox, Missi Pyle and Christopher Lee.

Rounding out the cast as the four lucky children of diverse backgrounds who, along with Charlie, win "golden tickets" in a global contest for an exclusive tour of Wonka's famous factory are: Jordan Fry as Mike Teavee; AnnaSophia Robb as Violet Beauregarde; Julia Winter as Veruca Salt; and Philip Wiegratz as Augustus Gloop.

The film is produced by Brad Grey and Richard D. Zanuck from a screenplay by John August, based on the book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," by Roald Dahl. Felicity Dahl, Patrick McCormick, Michael Siegel and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.

Acclaimed director Tim Burton brings his vividly imaginative style to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," about eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka, and Charlie, a good-hearted boy from a poor family who lives in the shadow of Wonka's extraordinary factory. Long isolated from his own family, Wonka launches a worldwide contest to select an heir to his candy empire. Five lucky children, including Charlie, draw golden tickets from Wonka chocolate bars and win a guided tour of the legendary candy-making facility that no outsider has seen in 15 years. Dazzled by one amazing sight after another, Charlie is drawn into Wonka's fantastic world in this astonishing and enduring story.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" will be released worldwide in 2005 by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Violet & Veruca Cast in Burton's Chocolate Factory

'Robert' alerted us that the parts of Violet and Veruca have been cast for director Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which stars Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket.

Annasophia Robb will take on the part of Violet Beauregarde and newcomer Julia Winter will take on Veruca Salt. Annasophia will be seen in the upcoming Because of Winn-Dixie, which is due out in January, 2005.

This will be Julia Winter's first film. Julia's character, Veruca had to act out scenes with potential actors for the role of Mike Teevee. The parts of Mike Teevee and Augustus Gloop are yet to be decided.

In the Warner Bros. adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, five golden tickets are hidden beneath the wrappers of Mr. Willy Wonka's delicious chocolate bars - five golden tickets which will change the lives of those who find them. The winning children are invited through the gates of Mr. Wonka's Chocolate Factory to see all the secrets and magic inside and to meet Mr. Wonka and his staff of Oompa-Loompas. For Charlie Bucket, a poor boy living within sight of the factory, winning the fifth and final golden ticket is just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.

Chocolate Covered Camera

http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2004322105,00.html

The new Willy Wonka film was in the goo last night — after a £300,000 camera was dropped into a giant vat of “chocolate”.

It plunged in after a technician failed to secure the wire-held camera.

And the crew watched in horror as it plunged into the 3ft-deep tank.

The disaster has delayed filming of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, which stars Johnny Depp as sweet factory boss Willy Wonka.

Insiders say the bill, including paying staff to stand idle, could top £500,000.

One revealed: “When the camera fell it was like a slap-stick scene straight from the movie. A team of riggers had come in specially from the States to set it up over a vat of synthetic chocolate.

“But someone made a mistake and it wasn't secured properly. The production team didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. The camera is probably beyond repair.”

The film of Roald Dahl's classic children's book also stars schoolboy Freddie Highmore, who plays Charlie Bucket, and Helena Bonham Carter.

None of the actors were present when the accident happened at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Bucks.

A spokesman for the film said: “Technical tests were being carried out to see how close the camera could be moved to the chocolate. A camera did go into the liquid owing to a mechanical fault.”

I heard they're filming right now in Britain. I think he will make an awesome Willy Wonka. I liked him in Pirates of the Caribbean and he seems to play character parts brilliantly.
It will surely be interesting to see how this version will come out.

the original book to film

i just reread the original book thinking about the new film seeing as it is supposed to be holding true to the original format.

just wondered what u would like to see from the original included?

here are a few of the obvious differences from existing film and original -

1) Most of kids bring 2parents.
2) oompa-loompa's are basically described as white pygmies (the film was changed to be more PC)
3) steamboat in book is a big pink hollowed out boiled sweet. could look great in new film.
4) veruca's exit is by squirrels who check for bad nuts, not geese and bad eggs.
5) we see all the children after they've been treated in the book, eg augustus all thin, mike tv now 10ft talletc
6) willy wonka has a beard.

....
i reckon new film can be different enough to avoid reinterpreting original.

Not sure if I belong here - I love Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka - not so much the movie. My first sexual fantasy was about Willy when I was like 13 (I was babysitting). I am so saddened! I thought I had found a tribe of kindred spirits and turns out you just like the movie. Sigh.

All I need to know I learned from Willy Wonka

"Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew, cover it in chocolate and a miracle or two?" Why, none other then everyone's favorite candy man: Willy Wonka. So now that you're wishing that this could be what a walk to an 8 a.m. class could be like, I'll let you in on something: everything you've ever wanted to know about surviving in college is in this timeless classic. From what to do on the weekends, to the study habits you've attempted to develop, all of your qualms will be resolved by rummaging through your childhood tapes and shoving this into your VCR.

So, now that you're searching through your head between the oompa-loompas and everlasting gobstoppers, here are a few things we've learned from watching this movie over and over (and over and over.)

We learned that when you are at the dining hall contemplating whether or not you should just go with the pre-packaged food, just remember: "Everything is eatable, edible. Well, you can eat almost everything." By almost, I mean, eat the wrong food and you just might end up turning into it. The moral being, don't eat anything unless someone tells you it is okay to.

We learned that if you skip studying to watch The Real World Las Vegas, you could end up floating through the air in a million pieces, only to be shrunk down to the size of a chocolate bar (how ironic.)

We learned that you should NEVER walk down a dark alley alone, you could be cornered by an odd man with glasses offering you a huge wad of cash (wait a second, how is that bad?)

We learned from Wonka's boat ride that any free ride is a BAD ride. Don't accept a ride from someone you don't know, it could closely resemble driving through the pits of hell.

We learned that you should never drink something when you have no knowledge as to what is inside. You never know what places you could fly to (also, how is that bad?), and how much you'll have to pay the school for damages to the walls (sometimes the woods just don't cut it.)

We learned that a room in which everything is cut in half makes a perfect office.

We learned that no matter how many years it has been since you got out of bed, if you get really good news, you will immediately be able to jump out and dance around the room.

We learned that if you have no money and your family is ridiculously poor the best thing to do when you find money in the sewer is to buy a chocolate bar because you will win a tour of the factory where said chocolate bar is made and be given the factory by its current owner. Who knew?

We learned that if your dad is rich enough, all you need to get anything you want is an incredibly annoying voice with which to whine, "But I want it NOW, Daddy!" (An English accent doesn't hurt either.)

We learned that you should never drink soda that will make you float unless you are in a room that 1) does not have doomed glass walls, and 2) does not have a razor sharp fan attached to the ceiling. Or you will be in BIG trouble.

We learned that burping is the perfect solution to every problem. I guess frat boys have got that one right.

We learned that in some places all laws of physics are completely and totally suspended, merely for the entertainment of the inhabitant of that place.

We learned you should absolutely always have a room that you can eat everything in, your friends will be insanely jealous.

We learned that it is totally normal for both sets of grandparents to spend their entire existence in the same bed.

We learned that if you are in the market for an oompa-loompa and you don't have the means to get one, it's OK because daddy can always cover the charges with his checkbook.

So now that Mr. Wonka's covered a good part of your college inquiries, there are two questions left, which are by FAR the most important questions a college student could ever imagine having the right answers to. "Where's the party at?" and "How much weight did I REALLY put on this year?"

The answer my friends, is simple..."Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker."

ok, so I am flipping through some random fantasy book i can't remember, and there is a poem. I recognize the first few lines as being from the movie. The whole poem went like this.

We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams
Wandering by lone sea breakers, and sitting by desolate streams
World losers and world forsakers on whom the pale moon gleams
We are the movers and shakers of the world forever it seems

Does anyone know who this is by?

Last night Willy Wonka was on and I was smoking some alternative green substance.

I swear the whole movie was made for stoners.
All the trippy scenes and double entendres.

AMAZING!

Any other 'altered state' experiences out there?

I am, of course, watching the movie behind me on Turner South. I'm thinking the greatest moment in the movie (for me) was watching Wonka emerge from the front door of his factory, limping along the path, catching his cane in the path, and then feinting a fall into a roll to amaze everyone and tell them they're going to have a great time.

Caught a rerun of "Will & Grace" last night which I'd never seen before - with Gene Wilder as Will's boss, a partner in the law firm who'd been away at the "London" office for years. Turns out he was actually in the looney bin.

Wilder was great as usual, doing his barely-suppressed maniac bit. At one point, he said "Thank you from the heart of my bottom. <pause> Strike that. Reverse it."

Nice little nod to us Wonkaphiles.

I recently saw a description of the movie as "satire." I can see (especially after reading all the books), that it could be science fiction. But satire? Certainly the movie makes a statement about spoiled kids and their parents. But is that satire?

ok so i think we can all agree that the ompa-lumpas were like one of the best parts of the whole movie but like where the fuck did they come from!? i mean were they migets that wonka made dress up like that? (oh god....thats a whole other topic) or were they geneticly grown by wonka for his chocolet factory shinanagins? or is there some secrect hidden tribe of ompa-lumpas out there (that i guess wonka found) that sing songs that teach lessons and are kinda fucked up? and if so just think what the women ompa-lumpas would look like!? seriously bad drag queens! and what about there kids?

so i know it was just a movie and all but am i the only one to ever think about this kinda stuff? just want to hear your thoughts about the strangely wise singing (hardcore) ompa-lumpas here people!
